As part of the 2017 Oscar race, TheWrap teamed up with 20th Century Fox and NASA to produce a cover shoot and interview series of the cast of Hidden Figures. TheWrap needed someone to helm the project who was capable of executing a photo shoot as well as producing and directing the motion elements of the project.
Due to the historical nature of the film, the shoot took place at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. With all the moving parts of a film press tour, our talent arrival time ended up landing at precisely the time the museum closed. And because of the safety regulations at the museum, we were not allowed to set up gear in any publicly accessible areas until the they closed. Which left us with a huge problem: how do you set up for a massive shoot with exactly zero time?
By virtue of the wonderful public relations team at the museum we were able to set up lighting and blocking in a small roped off area while the museum was still open.
NASA had arranged to have current NASA team members interview concurrently with each of the stars of the film. It was a treat to witness Teraji P. Hensen, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe meet current NASA heroes Charlie Bolden, Andrea Razzaghi, and LaNetra C. Tate. NASA was also kind enough to give us access to their vast library of historic footage and imagery.
We were given just under two hours to complete four interviews, a group cover setup, a group inside setup, and singles. Thanks to the industrious team of photo assistants, camera operators, and audio technicians we booked in DC, the impossible came together seamlessly.
